Welcome back to Grehan. Our alumni are one of the major strengths of our program. We take delight in your successes, and hold you up as examples to our current students every day. As of 2016, there are almost 8,000 alumni of the programs housed in the School of Journalism and Media (including those of you from the previous Advertising, Television/Radio and Telecommunications majors.) While much likely has changed since you were a student here, the fundamentals remain the same. We teach our students to be critical consumers of, and contributors to, the media. We hone their writing, editing and presentation skills. We immerse them in the professional expectations of the various media industries. And we do all this within the framework of a broad liberal arts education.

 

We emphasize the combination of theory and practice. Journalism majors are strongly encouraged to do internships, but can also hone their skills with the Kernel, the Kentuckian, and WRFL.  Broadcast journalism students are producing a live newscast four days a week (Monday-Thursday), aired on local cable. Students in Media Arts and Studies (formerly Telecommunications) are required to do internships before they graduate to put into play what they’ve learned in the classroom. 

 

We welcome alumni back to campus as part-time instructors, guest lecturers, internship sponsors, and/or mentors. If you’re interested in participating in any of these ways, please let us know. We hope you’ll also join us for some of our regular events: the Joe Creason lecture Program, the Gidel/Lombardo Lecture in Sports Communication, the Annual Alumni Association Symposium, and the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame induction luncheon. Many of the events in the school are covered in our publication, The Alum News.
