This scholarship honors the memory of William O. Billiter, a successful journalist and UK graduate who built a distinguished career in Journalism. Billiter wrote for the Louisville Courier-Journal, the Winchester Sun and the Los Angeles Times. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman that is a declared pre-journalism major. The applicant must show financial need and must have the desire for a career in journalism.

The scholarship honors the memory of Carol Sutton, the first woman to head a major American newspaper when she became managing editor of the Louisville Courier-Journal in 1974. Description:
Eva Jean Winkle was a 1989 CI graduate. While at UK, she served on the staff of the Kentucky Kernel and during her tenure they received the paper's first-ever Pacemaker Award. Upon graduation from UK she worked at a Louisville television station. Eva was an accomplished freelance writer and published many news articles and stories and worked on numerous movie scripts in Hollywood. This scholarship is open to students in good academic standing in the School of Journalism and Telecommunications who are senior staff writers or editors of the Kentucky Kernel or its successor student newspaper and plan to pursue a career in journalism, print or other media. This scholarship cannot be awarded in until spring of 2015.

Description:
This scholarship is in memory of Joe Hirsch, the renowned, award-winning Daily Racing Form executive columnist whose distinguished career spanned more than a half-century. Mr. Hirsch died in 2009. The scholarship is awarded to an incoming freshman or continuing undergraduate who is interested in working in or pursuing a career in writing in the thoroughbred industry, has a high school GPA of at least 3.0 (undergraduate GPA of at least 2.8 if a continuing student) and who has financial need as determined by the School’s Scholarship Committee. The recipient will be expected to complete an internship at a thoroughbred racing journalism-related organization. This scholarship was established in 2005 by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association and the Daily Racing Form.

Honors the memory of John Chaplin, a Lexington radio personality whose on-air name was Herb Oscar Kent. The Scholarship is awarded to current students, freshman through junior year, that are declared pre-majors or majors in the School, are Kentucky residents, show they have applied or are currently receiving financial aid as confirmed by the Office of Student Financial Aid, demonstrate financial need, and have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale. In addition, consistent with the University’s efforts to obtain the educational benefits of a diverse student body, it is the Donor’s request that preference in the award of this scholarship will first be given to students with a certified disability, and if no such applicants are available, then all other students that apply and meet the criteria stated herein are eligible for consideration. Notwithstanding this preference, every student will have an opportunity to compete for the scholarship.

This scholarship was established by the Scripps Howard Foundation in 2008 in honor of Judy Clabes' service to the Foundation. The scholarship is awarded to a declared upper-division major (preferably print/multimedia), who has demonstrated through class work, internships, part-time work, or extra-curricular activities, an exceptional understanding of and commitment to the importance of First Amendment advocacy and principles in the professional and civic life of a working journalist, and/or of the vital relationship of these principles to the preservation of democracy. A 500-700 word essay is required on the topic “Why the Protections Guaranteed Journalists under the First Amendment will be Essential to Your Career." Clabes is a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame (1997) and was named the CIS Outstanding Alumnus in 2004, along with her husband Gene Clabes.
