2018 Student Excellence Awards

Each year, students in CIS courses may be nominated for the Excellence in Composition & Communication Award (for their work in CIS 110/111/112) and the Excellence in Business Communication Award (for their work in CIS 300) presented by Instructional Communication and Research in the College of Communication and Information. These students were nominated by their professors for their outstanding written and oral communication in these courses. We are pleased to honor the following 2018 recipients of these two awards:

Lexi Shepherd

Excellence in Composition & Communication

Donovan Ferguson

Excellence in Business Communication

Lexi Shepherd is from the small town of Albion, Illinois. She is a freshman in the College of Agriculture, Food and Environment who is majoring in dietetics. Lexi’s favorite aspects of CIS 112 were getting to know the staff at her service learning organization, Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Hospital, and recording podcasts about her service learning experience with her fellow classmates. Lexi was nominated by her CIS 112 Instructor, Dr. Brandi Frisby. "Lexi had excellent attendance, preparation, engagement, and only produced the highest quality work," said Dr. Frisby. "Lexi excelled in all types of communication. She was someone who her peers looked up to as well."

Donovan Ferguson is a junior and double major in management and marketing in Gatton College of Business and Economics. He is from Johnson County, Kentucky. He said he is grateful for CIS 300 because it equipped him with the necessary skills to excel in the workforce. "Donovan is a model student," said CIS 300 Instructor Amanda Schagane. "His communication practices were in line with the goals of the course-always professional and communicated with a positive tone. His team's final project was easily the best in the class, and I'm confident that is due to his leadership." Ferguson said his experience in CIS 300 taught him that, "It is vital to apply knowledge from the classroom to your professional life, so that you can be an effective communicator in the business world."

Lexi Shepherd and Donovan Ferguson will be recognized at the College of Communication and Information Student Awards celebration at E.S. Good Barn (1451 University Drive) on Friday, March 23 from 2-4 p.m. Congratulations to this year's recipients!
