Showcase Your Talents: Building A Strong Portfolio

A Portfolio Development Workshop

The Information Communication Technology (ICT) program sponsored “Showcase Your Talents: Building A Strong Portfolio,” a portfolio development workshop with Brooksource Technical Youth on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.

Brooksource Technical Youth is a college recruiting initiative and mentorship program that the nationwide IT Staffing Agency, Brooksource, implemented several years ago. The agency hires entry level talent for clients like Humana, Yum! Brands, Aperture, and Leap Interactive – to name a few. Daniel Florer, Senior Technical Youth Recruiter and University of Kentucky graduate, led Wednesday’s professional development workshop.

Florer said that Brooksource recognized a need for visionaries and college students nearly 15 years ago upon discussing the conditions of an aging IT industry with clients. Technical Youth recruiters connect with young talent and assist in the interview and hiring process.

Seven students participated in the workshop and learned various ways to stand out in the application process.

Freshman ICT major, Rachel Holbrook said that she’d recommend the workshop to her peers, “I really enjoyed the workshop! Even though I am only still in the beginning of my college journey, this workshop gave me some really good information for when it comes time for me to start looking for a career or even an internship.”

Florer expressed that portfolios were increasingly helpful when it came to selecting an entry-level candidate nowadays.

Madison Mouser, junior in Communication at UK said that he would attend more ICT workshops even though he’s not interested in an IT job, because the technical recruiters are great with people, open, and give helpful advice about applying for jobs.

The ICT program will host its first-ever speed networking night on Thursday, Mar. 3 at 6 p.m. This event is open to all majors. If you already know that you’re interested in attending, you must apply by Monday, Mar. 1. You can email Harlie.Collins [at] uky.edu for the registration form.
